In Los Angeles, James has organized the first solo institutional presentations of artists Abigail DeVille, Sarah Cain, Simone Leigh, Alex Da Corte, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, and Charles Gaines. James has held curatorial positions at the Studio Museum in Harlem and Queens Museum, and has independently organized exhibitions, performances, and screenings throughout the US and Canada since 2004. She is an adjunct professor in the Graduate Art Department at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and regularly lectures on curating, contemporary art, and professional development for artists at various colleges and institutions across the country.

Jamillah James is also a visiting curator and speaker in the Otis Emerging Curators Retreat this summer.

Joanne Greenbaum: Things We Said Today follows New York-based artist Joanne Greenbaum’s prodigious mark-making and uncanny color sensibility across media and surface over a ten year period, 2007-2017. Using a language of abstraction that toggles between chaos and order, Greenbaum takes on architecture with a suite of recent, oversized canvases, punctuated by a series of sculptural pen drawings, watercolors, painted ceramics, and artist sketchbooks. In total, the gestures and forms that migrate from one substrate to another speak to an expansive practice that distinguishes little between form, yet conveys everything of the intensity and immediacy of unspoken thoughts amid the chaos of our time.

Joanne Greenbaum (b. 1953) lives and works in New York City. Over the past twenty years she has participated in numerous shows in the U.S. and Europe. Most recently Greenbaum has exhibited her work at Nicolas Krupp, Basel, Switzerland; Greengrassi, London, England; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art; Van Horn Gallery, Dusseldorf; Texas Gallery, Houston; and Rachel Uffner Gallery, New York. A career-spanning survey of her was mounted by Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich and traveled to Museum Abteiberg, Monchengladbach, Germany in 2008 - 09. Her work is in the collections of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.

Joanne Greenbaum: Things We Said Today is organized by Dina Deitsch and the Tufts University Art Galleries at the SMFA, Boston. The Ben Maltz Gallery at Otis College presentation is coordinated by Kate McNamara.

Starts: Sat, 19 May 2018 4:00 PM
